The story that DB purchased a town lot and built a cabin at Harrodstown (Harrodsburg) during his trip of 1774 to warn the surveyors is "just another legend that has been repeated so often that it is now accepted as fact." (HAMMON1:243)

Colonel William Preston requested Captain William Russell to dispatch two scouts to bring the surveyors home. Russel sent back word that "two of the best Hands I could think of, Danl. Boone, and Michl. Stoner . . . have [been] Engaged to search the Country, as low as the falls, and to return by way of Gaspers Lick, on Cumberland, and thro' Cumberland Gap." The two left 6/27/74 (HAMMON1:244, citing Russell to Preston, 6/26/1774, in Draper 3QQ46,63,64)

"There is no reason to believe that Boone, Stoner, or anyone else in Southern Virginia knew of Harrod's expedition to Kentucky, much less the location of his new town. For this reason it is logical to assume that if Boone or Stoner visited Harrodsburg before it was abandoned, they discovered it by accident." His task was to go to the falls (Louisville) to bring home Floyd; "those who suggest that Boone lingered about Harrodsburg, surveying and building a cabin, rather than spending his time searching for the surveyors, are actually saying that Kentucky's most famous pioneer disobeyed his orders for the hope of private gain!" (HAMMON1:247)

DB could not possibly have arrived any earlier than 7/4/74, and the Indian attack occurred on 7/8. He had only four days to build his supposed Harrodsburg cabin. At least 210 man hours or over 26 working days are needed to build one cabin, under the best of circumstances. (HAMMON1:248)

DB never mentioned in the accounts of those who were present at Harrodsburg in 1774, or by Col. Preston, who talked with members of the company immediately after their return to VA. And in later years DB never mentioned being in the new town. It was first mentioned in an account of Robert B. McAfee 67 years after the fact. (HAMMON1:251)

William Russell to William Preston, 8/28/1774: <Mr. Jno. Green and three others of Mr. Taylors Company have arrived on Clinch but did not see them as they only came to Blackmores . . . and this Day an Express, from Mr. Boone overtook me, to informe me of his return.> (HAMMON1:252, citing Draper 3QQ84)
