W.S. Bryan to Col. Benjamin Emmons, 12/6/1937: <No, I did not hear or know anything about the Boone [radio] programme to which you refer, and if I had known I probably would not have listened, because those things are generally so innacurate that they stir my energy. A few months ago I started in to listen to a series of Boone adventures, but they turned out so badly that I broke the machine and kicked it out the back door. They were about as much like Boone as my old shoe is like a potato. . . . People who prepare those "histories" know but little about the subjects, and just write to fill the space, thinking to themselves, "Oh well, everybody's dead, and there's nobody left to kick me -- so here goes!" I sometimes feel that way myself when I am writing history and cannot find the data just as I want it. There's nobody to kick me, so why worry?> William S. Bryan Papers, MHS
