David Meriwether, on a trip up the Missiouri as a young man of 19, circa 1815: <I had been informed that the celebrated Colonel Daniel Boone, whom I had once seen at my father's house [in Kentucky] when but a little boy, resided on the bank of the river, near a place then called Arrow Rock [the site of the earliest ferry west of Franklin, later the site of the town of Arrow Rock]. I asked my pilot if he knew the place, and he replied in the arrirmative. I told him that I wanted to land at Boone's house [this probably the Flanders and Jemima Boone residence] and see him. So, being in advance of the troops a short distance, we hastened on and arrived at the Colonel's residence in the evening, when I proceeded to the house. Seeing a tall slender old gentleman sitting in the shade of the house, I inquired if that was Colonel Boone. He answered "Yes, what is left of him." Then telling him who I was, he greeted me very cordially. I remained at the house in conversation with the old Colonel until suppertime, and, at bedtime, I returned on board the boat. I never saw him afterwards.> David Meriwether, MY LIFE IN THE MOUNTAINS AND ON THE PLAINS, edited by Robert A. Griffen (Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1965):29-30.
