NATHANB 1812 President Madison appointed him captain of mounted rangers, a company of MO frontiersmen, and in the next year he rose to the rank of major. In 1832 he became captain in the regiment of Mounted Rangers. Afterward he served as captain and then as major in the First Regiment of United States Dragoons. He became lieutenant colonel of the Second Regiment of United States Dragoons on 7/25/1850, resigning three years later. He died on 6/12/1857. Here is reprinted his journal of his reconnoisance of the western prairies in 1843.
