He publicly sentenced a desperado to be whipped, and the man intimated that only Boone's age saved him from being beaten, DB says: "You coward, let not my gray hairs stand in the way, for old as I am, I am young enought to whip the likes of you." A miserly man seized the cow of a poor widow to satisfy a claim. DB rendered this decision: "The widow owes you, Tim Turley, yet you are a scoundrel to take her only cow. The law says you shall have it. Take it and go, but never look an honest man in the face again." To the widow: "Let him have it; I'll give you a beter one," and it did that very day.
