<Besides presenting to General Washington a copy of the Wilmington edition of his history and the Philadelphia edition of his map, also gave a copy of each to Daniel Boone. The Boone copies became a part of the Robert Hoe library and were later acquired by the late Mr. Hershel V. Jones of the MINNEAPOLIS JOURNAL and are still a portion of his estate.> R. C. <I have often been asked for my opinion as to the accuracy and reliability of this early map. The wavy courses for the streams show that it is merely a sketch map. Filson's information cam from many people and it often was conflicting. Considering the conditions under which he was laboring, it is a remarkable production and well answered the purpose for which it was intended, but as a map of Kentucky it is far from accurate.> R. C. The watermark of a plow with the inscription "Work & Be Rich" was only one of several watermarks found in the original Philadelphia printings of the map. <I have made an effort to learn where and by whom this paper was made but without success. The character of the watermark partakes so much of "Poor Richard's" sayings that I thought it might have been made at one of those eighteen paper mills that Benjamin Franklin told Dr. Warville, in 1788, he had aided in establishing.> He also found this watermark on paper used for a letter of 1779 in the Delaware Historical Society.
