John C. Boone, son of Nathan Boone, had the gravestones cut, but left them to be placed by someone else. He afterward said <the graves of his grandfather and grandmother were in different rows and not side by side.> S. C. Griswold writes here to say that he/she was present at the disinterment and knows well the surprise caused by the discovery that the bottom plank of the coffin supposed to contain the remains of Mrs. Boone was nearly sound while the only vestige of Boone's coffin was a brass hinge and a very small piece of the shrouding. The disintermment committee hired a freedman, Jefferson Callaway, to accompany them and dig up the remains. The owner came by accident upon the scene, and told them to stop. At first they refused, saying they had authority. There followed an extended disagreement. A large crowd collected, including many relatives of Boone; finally Griswold (the owner) and the relatives agreed to the removal on they condition of renumberation for the damage to the property. Unidentified clipping, from the REPUBLIC [?] circa 1894. Miscellaneous clipping file, MHS
