Boyhood home. The acquisition of the birthplace farm was initiated by Daniel Carter "Dan" Beard, National Commissioner of the Boy Scouts. He organized a committee for its purchase by the state. Washington's approval was obtained to restore the homestead and improve the grounds as a recreation for young people; unemployed boys in the vicinity were employed to clear the property and erected a "wayside shelter" or youth hostel on the banks of the creek. This under the authority of the NYA. Isaac C. Sutton (president of the Daniel Boone Homestead Commission), "Daniel Boone's Birthplace," PENNSYLVANIA PARK NEWS, April-May 1949.
