Hugh Caperton to Gov. VA, 10/31/1792: <Sir: The many alarming accounts daily received of hostile intentions of the indian enemy, makes me anxious to visit my Garrisons in Greenbriar and Kanawa; to which I intend settling out in a very few days. The neglect of the person appointed Contractor for my Company [DB], obliged me, in order to supply that defect, to make several Contracts which I stand bound to discharge on my return. I should feel myself happy if your Excellency would order me such a sum as would enable me in part to fulfil those engagements which I have entered into on behalf of the publick, and charge the same to my general account. On my return here, which I purpose to be in the beginning of December, I shall bring forward an accurate account of all the expence incurred in my department.> CALENDAR OF VIRGINIA STATE PAPERS 6 (1886, reprint New York: Kraus, 1868):119
