Daniel Boone was a juror of the Rowan Court on 10/20/1759 (Rowan Court Minutes 2:281), and there are other references to his service as a juror. In 2/1770 the Rowan County Court named him, along with several others, to "Lay off a Road which leads from the Shallow ford . . . the Nearest and Best way through the Great Gap of said Brushy Mountains to George Boons at the mouth of Beaver Creek" in Wilkes County (Rowan Court Minutes 3:171). <It appears from extant records that Daniel Boone was in debt most of his life. Rowan County Court Minutes record numerous references to his being sued in court for debt. Most seem to have been relatively small debts of less than 20 pounds probably incurred when he purchased needed supplies for hunting and exploring. One court action in March 1764, however, was for 50 pounds and appears to have been for unpaid taxes or quitrents. He had sold the 640-acre Bear Creek tract in Feb. 21, 1764.> James W. Rev. Georg Soelle, a Moravian preacher, recorded in his diary two visits to the DB residence, one in 9/1771, the second in 2/1773. On the first visit, Soelle went first to the home of John Boone, then fifteen miles to the home of William Grant. Nearby lived William Bryant with his wife Mary, where Soelle saw "old mother Boone," SARAHMORGANB. Then he traveled to the home of DB, (he calls him "Nathanael Buhn"). The journey was "a good day's ride to the mountains, over a very bad path." In Michael Lofaro's introduction to the Bison Books edition of Bakeless, he quotes from Soelle's diary: On 9/15/1771 he saw Rebecca and noted: <By nature she is a quiet soul given to few words. She told me of her trouble and the frequent distress and fear in herheart. . . .> Lofaro says Howell Boone thinks this might be a reference to the BASTARD. But regardless, it is a nice indication of her character. James W. Wall, Flossie Martin, Howell Boone, compilers, THE SQUIRE, DANIEL AND JOHN BOONE FAMILIES IN DAVIE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA (Mocksville, NC: Davie Printing Co., 1982):11, citing RECORDS OF THE MORAVIANS 2:794; and Michael Lofaro, "Introduction to the Bison Book Edition," in John Bakeless, DANIEL BOONE: MASTER OF THE WILDERNESS (Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 1989):xixn.
