Process of finally gaining a deed to land: get certificate (from land commission) or warrant; run a survey on the ground; obtain from the surveyor a "certificate of Survey and Plat; make entry or location with county surveyor; payment at each stage; eventually obtained a grant or patent for the land allotted. At every stage delayed or halted by a caveat interposed by some adverse claimant; and even in the end, his grant was in danger of being set aside or saubordinated to some prior conflicting location or claim held superior to his own. William Fleming at Boonesborough during December 1779. Reported weather very severe, cold, freezing rain. By Christmas, the Kentucky frozen over. On the 25th, he crossed on the ice, the same day the Boone party set out for Boone's Station. He reported on 1/9/1780: "The Weather continued in the day Clear and Freezing in the night. Is severely cold as ever I felt it in America. The People at this place all sickly from colds, the hardships they endured in the Journey and the Change of Air, the most of the Settlers moving from S. Carolina." Samuel M. Wilson, THE FIRST LAND COURT OF KENTUCKY, 1779-1780 (Lexington: Kentucky State Bar Association, 1923):48
