MOUNTAINMUSE: pretentious in form, long-winded in diction, ludicrous rather than sublime. Bryan's most striking feature as a poet is a habit of garrulity which completely destroys the simple directness of his model. But unlike Filson, Bryan attempts, however clumsily, to give us some emotional response to the events he is narrating, and in this attempt Flint wholeheartedly supports him. Flint lamented that the work had been "consigned very unjustly to oblivion" [INDIAN WARS OF THE WEST:223].

FLINT probably did not interview Boone, but merely knew the family and had conversed with the old man. FLINT gets DB's birthdate wrong: 1746. Has him moving to SC. The firehunt tale.

DB's mission: "The rich and boundless valleys of the great west -- the garden of the earth -- and the paradise of hunters, had been won from the domination of the savage tribes, and opened as an asylum for the oppressed, the enterprising, the free of every land. . . he had caught some glimmerings. . ." etc.

Moral choices are all too simple and too much on the surface. Flint never chooses to see the thematic implications of what migh happen -- contradictions. This is much in contrast with Cooper, whose theme is the price that one must pay for progress. Leatherstocking is an unwilling servant of providence. In THE PRAIRIE, he declares that the Garden of Eden "was not after the miserable fashions of our times, thereby directly giving the lie to what the world calls its civilizing. No, no, the garden of the lLord was the forest then, and is the forest now, where the fruits do grow and the birds do sing, according to his own wise ordering." (232 in his edition)

FLINT has reservations about DB and other frontiersmen: they are too close to the Indians.

Boone sees himself in terms of a providential scheme, and understood that his way of life will be eliminated by the advent of civilization. He is very malleable to the providential design, and is willing to move on. Although the hunter's life is a good, civilization is a greater good. No contradiction.
