"Daniel Boone Heritage Trail" 1: This would recognize the Daniel Boone Heritage Trail. Study of the proposed trail route was authorized by Public Law 94-527, to determine the feasibility and desirability of designation the route as a component of the National Trails System. The proposed trail route was evaluated to determine if it qualified as either a National Scenic Trail of a national Historic Trail. The studies by the National Park Service rejected a senic trail designation because its establishment would require extensive acquisition of privately-owned lands for a right-of-way and the costs would be prohibitive. A National Historic Trail designation was rejected by the National Park Service on the grounds that Boone's trail was not of "sufficient historical importance." <H. R. 3787 would authorize a third alternative to recognize the significance of the pioneering contributions of Daniel Boone in the exploration and settlement of the Nation. It authorizes the Secretary of the Interior to mark significant trail route segments and sites of the Daniel Boone Heritage Trail. The Secretary would be authorized to accept donations of suitable markers for placement at appropriate locations.> "Amending the National Trails System Act," SENATE REPORT 98-557, 98TH CONGRESS, 2D SESSION.
