Roll19_65 From September 9, 1826 from John Johnston to Governor Gofs
|This note from Johnston to Governor Gofs is very interesting especially because it has the same date as the last letter. Johnston is asking Gofs for <his funds for the last six months of the year be placed at his disposal as soon as practicable>. Johnston wants these funds because an Agent has reported that a group of 205 Indians is passing by Sandusky on the western side. Johnston has made his intentions known that he fully plans on joining the Indians and it seems to say that he wants to learn from them. |
This letter is very informative because it shows direct dialog that deals with Indians and the Agency from the Michigan Territory. The agency seems to be taking a very fond interest in learning about the Indians and really trying to connect with them and have them join the Union. Johnston has been working on plans in Sandusky, based on passed letters, but when he hears about the passing of the Indians, he drops his work and asked for a 6 month(!) advancement to go and work with them. That speaks volume for what their goals were at the time.
