Roll 2_29: A. J. Dallas to Lewis Cass, May 29, 1815
|Dallas calls upon Cass to <endeavor to quiet the Indians, and to protect the country from their hostility>. He also requests that Cass communicate to him the state of the Indians and any changes regarding the relationship between the government and the Indians.|
Dallas attaches a letter that he received from General Duncan McArthur, dated May 15, 1815. In this letter, McArthur states that he has just learned from Whistler at Fort Wayne that the Indians <have declared their intentions to continue the war against the United States>. They also stated that they will not allow the lands in Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois to be surveyed or settled. It will be necessary to either <hold a treaty with the Indians, or send an army against them>.
