Wiliam Andrews and Ava B. Gavit to Lewis Cass, January 5th, 1817
|Location listed as Carrying River.|
The two authors state that there is a man by the name of LaPlante trading at their location without a license. It appears that he has a license to trade at Otter Creek, Fort Defiance, and at Lower Sandusky, but nothing can be shown to justify his retailing of goods and spiritous liquors to the Indians at Carrying River. They feel it is their duty to inform Cass, and if Cass is smart, he will send people to look into this. Feel like LaPlante is illegally making profit off of the Indians in their region and must be stopped.
