Crawford says he received Cass' letter regarding the employment of <Mechanicks> in order to benefit the Indians Cass oversees. The expenses associated have been submitted to the President, who approved all hiring except for the Tailor. The expense would reduce the number of presents given annually to the tribes and is therefore declined. Crawford also states that the income of the military posts within the Indian Territory and the trading establishments will increase expenses.

Whether the expenses are covered is dependent on national legislature, which looks unlikely without policy change. Therefore, the department itself must look at removing expendatures that aren't popularly used or supportive of the tribes.

This letter and its contents may be shared with all members of the Indian Department at Cass' discretion.

The annual expense of those employed must be stated clearly so that it can be deducted from the contingent presents distributed within each Agency annually or semi-annually. Want to do whatever they can to make a favorable impression with the Indians.

Hopes Cass can share his information with the government as soon as possible.
