Dowling is disapproving of the Miamies request to delay the removal process, citing the Treaty of 1840, and his duty to fulfill his government contract as prompt as possible. Nonetheless, Dowling still plans on commencing removal next May, as the season provides the best conditions for removal. Dowling then mentions that if the Department of Indian Affairs do not meet their request to extend removal, they could authorize chief Lafontaine as the agent to sell Miami property. This property sale would not delay removal, but Dowling explains that very few Miamies have property to sell.
