A man named Joseph Yates arrived in January with a black man who he said was his property. He said he was the nephew of Judge Yates, and was on the way to Praire des Chien to purchase land for dutch families, and took a path through through Fort Wayne and Chicago. Bowyer overheard a conversation between Yates and Col. Dickson in which Yates says his life is in danger and that he needs Dickson to get him out of the country. Bowyer says he was threatened by Yates when he confronted Yates on having papers and Yates said he was the son of Judge Yates. Yates refused to give Bowyer papers and so Bowyer asked Col. Chambers to take Yates into the Fort for investigation. The black man said that he was actually a free man who Yates convinced to pose as a slave in promise of a plantation. Yates is revealed to have much less money than he initially announced, and his only paper is most likely a forgery.
