The route from "mouth of Beaver": up the Yadkin to the mouth of Elk Creek; up that stream to the present village of Derby; crossing the Blue Ridge at Bamboo; down the north slope of the Blue Ridge to Three Forks of the New River; through present town of Boone; Hodges Gap; Straddle Gap; Zionville; Trade. The DAR placed markers on this trail; at one time most were visible from the road, "but the modern straightened highways have passed them by." [We saw one on Tennessee 91 over Iron Mountain; effigy of Boone seated with dog on tablet of metal taken from the Battleship Maine. The marker itself formed from stone in the shape of an Indian arrowhead.] George H. Maurice, DANIEL BOONE IN NORTH CAROLINA (Eagle Springs, NC: Privately Printed, 1959):19-20
