In INDIAN WARS OF THE WEST (1833), Flint refers to Filson's book as an "exaggerated and sophomorical account" of DB's life. Yet the two approaches were very similar. Both men see a similar historical process in which civilization brings benefits which are placed in explicit contrast to the evils of a more primitive state. And both authors present DB as a man proud of his role as godfatgher to civilization. Folsom in FLINT1:14-16
