FLINT Interprets the West absolutely in terms of the idea of progress. The West becomes most desirable as it approaches conditions in the East. Life becomes more desirable as human surroundings grow more civilized. In this regard he offers a clear contrast to the "primitivism" of an author such as Cooper, who uses Natty Bumpo to criticize society. In the DB bio, DB is a willing servant of society, proud of his role as pathfinder for the more sophisticated social order to follow. Folsom in FLINT:12-13
