Although practically unknown today, he was an important literary figure in the first half of the 19th century: editor for a time of the prestigious NY KNICKERBOCKER, the geographer-historian author of A CONDENSED GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY OF THE WESTERN STATES (1828) and THE HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY OF THE MISSISIPPI VALLEY (1832), and the novelist of several works including FRANCIS BERRIAN (1826) which was, in its day, highly regarded.
