The most successful of Western regional writers of the early 19th century living in the West and writing primarily on Western themes and subjects. Was born in 1780 in MA; to OH in 1815, following an uncle who had gone in 1787. Trained at Harvard (1800) for the ministry; 12 yrs as pastor at Lunenburg MA; detested it and was detested; went West as missionary for Missionary Society of CT; resigned in 1818. Mostly associated with Cincinnati, from where he edited the WESTERN MONTHLY REVIEW (1827-30) Folsom in FLINT1:8
