In the 19th century DB is most frequently portrayed in his old-age, already living on the outskirts of civilization. They often add years to his age; cf. Filson, who, according to Slotkin, suppresses his age in the narrative. In the dime novels as well (St. John and Badger) he is advanced in age, celebate, and without a home.
