Keywords Lake Michigan Potawatomies prisoner reward
People Cass, Lewis Crawford, W.H. Postlewhait, Charles
In response to Jan. 3rd letter, Cass informs W.H. Crawford that there is little hope for any prisoners still in Indian possession, but he has heard a report that 1 or 2 people are being held on the West side of Lake Michigan, and has employed a Potawatomy Chief (with a reward of money) and his party to explore and bring in any prisoners he may find.
In the spring of 2019, Dr. Cameron Shriver’s “Intro to the Miami Tribe” students researched the records of the Superintendent of Indian Affairs in the Michigan District (which included the Miami Tribe in northern Indiana) and files of the Office of Indian Affairs related to Miami Removal to west of the Mississippi River in 1846.
